Welcome to this month's bilingual newsletter from the research group Diversity in Education (DivE)! Summer is just around the corner and most of us are ready to dive into Mjøsa (or some other lake) after a long semester. First, we would like to give you an update on our most recent activities. In this newsletter, we're celebrating no less than one new professor, four new books, and new publications, coming from our outstanding DivE-colleagues!

FAITHED-teamet har nådd en ny milepæl! 3. juni ble antologien Hvor skal du i helga? EN bok om religionsmangfold, trosopplæring og skole  lansert, utgitt ved Cappelen Damm Forskning. Det ble en veldig fin seanse i Berner-kjelleren på Litteraturhuset i Oslo. Lanseringen ble godt besøkt med ca. 50 i salen og like mange som fulgte med på streamingen. Knut-Willy Sæther, professor og redaktør for den vitenskapelige skriftserien Religionsfag Profil på Cappelen Damm, ledet seansen. Prosjektleder og redaktør Anders Aschim hadde en innledning om FAITHED-prosjektet før alle kapittelforfatterne fikk sine to minutter i spotlighten og fortalte om sentrale funn og diskusjoner. Fra DivE bidro også Ole Kolbjørn Kjørven (medredaktør), Synnøve Markeng (kapittelforfatter) og Anne Grethe Kjelling (kapittelforfatter). DivE gratulerer!

New Professor of Education: In May, DivE researcher Jonas Yassin Iversen received the news that he has been promoted to Professor of Education. Iversen has been employed at the University of Inland Norway and has been a member of DivE since 2017, and he earned his PhD in Education at the same institution in 2020. His research and teaching have focused on multilingualism in teacher education, minority language instruction both within and outside public schools, and multicultural education. Congratulations, Jonas!

DivE researcher Danelle du Plessis has just published a new article in Educational Review titled ‘Institutional practices sustaining race-evasion in Norwegian schools: counter-narratives from racially minoritised teachers’. Based on interviews with seven racially minoritised teachers working across primary, lower-, and upper-secondary schools in Norway, the article explores how colour-blind ideologies and institutional structures in silent discussions on racism and sustain systemic inequities. Drawing on Critical Race Theory, the study identifies four key race-evasive practices that marginalise pupils and reinforce dominant cultural norms. You can read the full article here. Congrats!

Ny lærebok i flerkulturell pedagogikk: DivE-professor Jonas Yassin Iversen ga nylig ut læreboken «Flerkulturell pedagogikk: En kritisk introduksjon». Den gir leseren en grunnleggende introduksjon til flerkulturell pedagogikk og presenterer nyere forskning og teoretiske perspektiver på feltet. Utgivelsen bygger videre på arbeidet til sentrale forskere innen flerkulturell pedagogikk ved Universitetet i Innlandet, som Thor Ola Engen og Thor-André Skrefsrud, og trekker veksler på nyere forskning fra bl.a. DivE-miljøet. Boken henvender seg til studenter i lærerutdanningene og bachelor- og mastergradsstudenter i pedagogikk og spesialpedagogikk, samt lærere i grunnskole og videregående opplæring. Du kan bestille ditt eksemplar her!

DivE researcher Vander Tavares has published a seminal volume that challenges Global South-Global North dichotomies in higher education by exploring the possibilities and limitations of such socio-political dichotomies from multiple perspectives. Foregrounding a diversity of international voices from countries and territories such as Brazil, China, Denmark, India, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Zimbabwe and others, this volume presents conceptual reflections and empirical studies on strategies, initiatives, and policies aimed at enhancing collaboration between South-North higher education contexts.

Nordic Anthology on Multilingualism in Teacher Education: DivE researcher Jonas Yassin Iversen is one of three editors behind the Nordic anthology "Teacher Education for Working in Linguistically Diverse Classrooms: Nordic Perspectives", in which teacher educators and researchers from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden explore how teacher education can prepare students for the multilingual reality that characterizes today’s schools. By comparing research findings from across the Nordic countries, the anthology identified key issues for improving teacher education’s capacity to prepare students for working in linguistically diverse classrooms. The anthology is published with open access and can be read for free by following this link.

In May, DivE researcher Thor-André Skrefsrud participated in the 2nd Transnational Project Meeting of the Erasmus+ project BRIDGE-ELT, held in Granada, Spain. This initiative aims to empower English language teachers by supporting their integration of AI tools into teaching practices. The project seeks to ensure that all students can benefit from enhanced teaching methods and opportunities and emphasizes the importance of adopting a critical approach to AI. In addition to Skrefsrud, the Norwegian project team includes DivE researcher Vander Tavares, and others from INN.

Vårt nyeste medlem, Rannveig Beito Svendby, står for viktige populærvitenskapelige formidlinger fra DivE, og har publisert hele tre kronikker på under en måned. Rannveig løfter spørsmål rundt tilgang til høyere utdanning, studenters sikkerhet og hvordan vi kan lære elever å diskutere vanskelige spørsmål. Les kronikkene ved å trykke på knappene:

I løpet av våren har to av DivEs (kritiske) stipendiater hatt milepæler: Shahrzad Nouri hadde midtveislesing med professor Camilla Eline Andersen som leser, med prosjektet Critical perspectives on inclusion in basic adult education in Norway – mapping the field. Danelle du Plessis har hatt sluttlesing for sitt prosjekt Reframing race and racism for teacher education: Insights from racially minoritised teachers in Norwegian schools, hvor førsteamanuensis Stine Bang Svendsen fra NTNU var leser. Vi gratulerer!

I mai deltok DivE-forsker Synnøve på  konferanse i Lund i Sverige. Her var forskere fra Asia og Europa samlet for å diskutere hva religionsundervisning er og hva det er å hente fra disse ulike kontekstene. Synnøve deltok med en kort presentasjon av FAITHED-prosjektet og en paper-presentasjon. På bildet ser dere gruppen samlet foran en av de flotte universitetsbygningene i Lund.
